About
Since 1988, Community Action Center (CAC) has been a primary resource for thousands of people and families experiencing poverty in Whitman County. CAC operates as a private nonprofit with IRS 501(c)(3) charitable status. The staff at CAC work day in and day out to move people and communities toward a positive future throughout Whitman County. CAC offers many different programs ranging from energy assistance and home weatherization to homeless and transitional housing services to legal referrals and a mobile farm stand! CAC MISSION: “Our goal is to empower the people and communities of Whitman County to be self-sustaining by promoting the stability & self-reliance of people with low to moderate income and [by] promoting cooperation between local communities to enhance social and economic resource development.”

- Transportation
- This service area includes programs such as bus passes, gas cards, medical transportation and van service.
- Employment Assistance
- This service area includes programs such as career planning, social enterprises, job assistance, vocational skills and training and WorkFirst community jobs.
- Emergency Services
- This service area includes programs such as food banks, emergency shelters, motel vouchers and rental/mortgage assistance.
- Energy Assistance & Weatherization
- This service area includes programs such as emergency shut off prevention, energy assistance, heating system repairs, minor home repair and weatherization.
- Food & Nutritional Programs
- This service area includes programs such as food banks, meal sites, and SNAP (food stamps).
- Housing Assistance
- This service area includes programs such as affordable housing, permanent supportive housing, rental assistance, and homelessness prevention and rapid rehousing.
- Veterans
- This service area includes programs such as counseling for veterans, housing services for veterans, and supportive services to veterans and families.
- Victim & Legal Services
- This service area includes programs such as crime victims advocacy, domestic violence prevention, legal referrals and services, and voicemail.
